The idea behind the house is interesting, it leaves the imagination to wander. To spark a little excitement in the "what if" catalog of my brain. So, as I discovered last year, that a movie was being released based on this crazy house... I was intrigued. I've decided to finally sit down and watch it, and have my opinions. I will begin spoiler free, before moving on to spoilers. SPOILER FREE Helen Mirren plays Sarah Winchester, the wealthy majority owner of the Winchester repeating arms company. Sarah believes that she is cursed, that the dead isn't particularly excited about dying at the hands of the Winchester Rifle. After consulting with a medium, she relocates to San Jose, buys a nice sized 7 bedroom house, and begins construction. Enter Dr. Eric Price, played by Jason Clarke. He is hired by Winchester Arms to asses whether she is medically unfit to continue to control the company. Winchester relies heavily on jump scares, I don't actually believe there is any actual scary scenes that wasn't highlighted by a loud noise and sudden movement. The scares seemed cheap, and unearned. I actually enjoyed the plot, and found the evolution of the story fun... saving that for spoilers. Jason Clarke and Helen Mirren worked well together, it might just be me being biased because I have been looking forward to this movie for a while, but the majority of the acting was on point and didn't feel wooden (which happens so easily in horror movies set in this era). Predictable.
My least favorite quality in a bigger Hollywood horror movie, predictable. Body count is low (2), and the characters never really seemed like they were ever in real danger (although they clearly should be). Both characters that meet their demise are garbage characters, they have little character development and there is no emotional connection to these characters as they die. The baddie wasn't much of a twist, both of the people I watched the film with saw the character reveal coming only a 1/4 of the way through the movie. The ending was annoyingly vague, the bullet shell, that housed the bullet, that killed Eric, can somehow kill the ghost. I understand that since the objects that have taken a life can be more powerful, but I don't care. It was a lame way for the baddie to go down. Predictable, sums it up. BUT STRANGELY... I still enjoyed it. I liked the plot. That Dr. Eric was brought in to asses Mrs Winchester, that she hand picked him. I liked the connection of the Garden, and once I finally caught that they were going in that direction, I was less annoyed that Dr. Eric moved the conversation (in the beginning of the movie) pointlessly to the garden. Dr. Eric was an addict, which was a good enough excuse as to why he wasn't 100% on board with the fact that he was being harassed by ghosts. I thought that was a clever way to keep him in the dark as long as possible. Blame it on the drugs. The special effects were good, there wasn't a lot of them, but they generally didn't last long enough for me to pick it a part as I was watching the movie. Would I watch it again? Not for a while. It defiantly needs to have some distance between views. 6 haunted rooms out of 10. Just a movie. Let me know if you agree, follow me on twitter @mikesaltmoose, or on facebook.com/mikesaltwrites
